oh fuck no.
>bank of america
aka those assholes who charge me 6 bucks to withdraw money from them. Fuck that. BRING ON THE SHADY 7/11 ATMS
Still don’t see the big deal about a $5 monthly debit card fee. It’s only if you happen to use your debit card that month, and only one fee for the entire month. No use? Great, no fee!
I’m doing $6 a month regardless of what purchases I make and have been doing so for four years. But it is only $6.
kinda shit for me because i’m on a plan that charges me if i use a teller.
so if i use a teller, i’m charged
and if i use my debit card, i’m charged
fml
Probably worth me noting that I’ve got a bank access card, which I use for real-world purchases and ATMs. And then I have a separate debit card that I use for online purchases, or when I’m overseas.
I’uno how America handles that, whether you guys have access cards or whatever that you can use for real-world purchases/ATMs, or if you just do everything through one card.
Our debit cards have the same use as your access cards. Pulls money from your account for everyday transactions. Also they make online purchases like your debit cards. So unless they want extra money spent for their account each month when they buy groceries etc. they’d have to pay with cash gotten from an ATM. Which in many cases will also cost money. So yeah. Trouble for people hard up for cash.
Sometimes I’m unexpectedly introduced to new cultural differences and this is shaping up to be one of those times. I’m used to debit cards being a separate service (which goes through Visa or MasterCard) that requires the user to transfer cash into it before it can be used, and ATMs that only charge a fee if you’re using an ATM that doesn’t belong to your bank.
And then an access card is simply locked to withdrawals and in-store purchases, and there isn’t a single store online that accepts them. It’s the default card that everyone gets with their bank account, regardless of the bank they’re with.
So if America’s debit and access cards are one and the same, then I suddenly understand how this is actually a problem.
In germany, the debit card is what you get with your account, and usually free. You can pay with it pretty much everywhere in germany (Gas stations, supermarkets, even smallish stores most of the time, some pizza delivery guys…) and in a lot of places in the EU in general, and you can withdraw money from ATMs with it. Fees are usually none beyond whatever you pay for the bank account (oftentimes that is nothing, as well), and ATM withdrawals from ATMs of your bank or associated banks are free. You can also usually go slightly over, though not much - and you pay like 19% interest on whatever you go over, so it’s best to avoid that.
For online payments, these debit cards are not usually accepted, but at least in germany and for german stores (and, via paypal and similar services, sometimes for others as well) you can use automatic debit transfer, which is hella convenient.
I’m just here like:
